Welcome to the genealogy home page.

Purpose of these genealogy pages: Doing genealogy is a bit like playing golf. Many people can do it, but few are really adept at it. A major weakness for many people is their failure to take advantage of the technology available to them. The purpose of this website is to discuss some of these shortcomings (three articles) and suggest how they can be overcome both in theory (in the articles) and in practice via the example of a surname-based genealogy that takes advantage of the capability of the Internet.

How to contribute: Questions, comments, and suggestions for additional topics are encouraged. Please e-mail them to info@vfthomas.com, call 207-266-5748, or write to Genealogy Project, c/o V. F. Thomas Co.; P. O. Box 400; Southwest Harbor, ME 04679.

Genealogical Projects that are Redundant - Much time and money is wasted by redoing what someone else has already done.

Some Methods Used in Genealogical Books that are Unnecessary on the Internet - Many people treat the Internet as if it were a book.

Presenting your Source Material - Today you can "take" people to all the places you have been and show them what you have seen.

From Theory to Practice - Here is a prototype website to show how I envision surname-based genealogy will be (indeed, can be) done using today's technology.
