Below is a description of completed activities planned by Champlainers or organizations along with the results of those activities.

Fern Walk
Plan: At 10:00 am on Monday, August 27, 2007, Thomas Vining will be going for a walk on the Valley Trail to identify ferns (monilophytes). The recent Flora of Acadia National Park checklist included nine islands near Mount Desert Island in the "MDI unit". Thus, it is necessary for the Champlain Project to verify the presence of each species on Mount Desert Island itself. Tom would prefer to be a part of a group of no more than 5 or 6, so please let him know as soon as possible if you are interested. Please e-mail info@vfthomas.com or call him at 207-266-5748 and leave a message. The rain (snow?!) date will be Wednesday, August 29, at 10:00 am.
Results: Likely due to the short advance notice about this walk, only the organizer was present. Ten species of monilophytes were observed: Dryopteris campyloptera, D. intermedia, D. marginalis, Onoclea sensibilis, Osmunda cinnamomea, O. claytoniana, Parathelypteris noveboracensis, Phegopteris connectilis, Polystichum acrostichoides, and Pteridium aquilinum ssp. latiusculum. This information has been reported on the monilophyte checklist.

Earth Day Roadside Clean-up
Plan: April 26, 2008 - 9:00 a.m. The Somes-Meynell Wildlife Sanctuary will be sponsoring a group to pick up trash along the sanctuary's roadsides in Somesville. Join the fun, be part of the camaraderie, and help make a difference in your community. Both people and wildlife will appreciate your efforts! Snacks and equipment will be provided. Meet at the sanctuary's headquarters at 9 a.m.
Results: Four people participated in the trash pick-up and filled five bags with what was thrown out along both sides of Route 102 (and into the woods) between the sanctuary entrance/exit and the Somesville fire station.
