Notes:
The following surnames have been modified to bring them in line with current spelling: Dawes (from Daws), Ellingwood (Ellinwood), Emery (Emmery), Hamor (Harmer), Hotchkiss (Hodgkiss), Lynam (Lyman), Remick (Remack), Smallidge (Smiledge), and Wasgatt (Wasgat). From some of these variant spellings we might get a hint at how they were (mis)pronounced (e.g., Ellinwood vs. Ellingwood).
Dickson may be a variant spelling of Dixon.
Over the course of five censuses (1790–1830), there are a variety of surnames of individuals with the first name Nathaniel that may be variants of a single surname. Specifically, there are: Nathaniel Massy (Mount Desert 1790), Nathaniel Masser (Eden 1800), Nathaniel Morris (Eden 1810), Nathaniel Mercer and Nathaniel Mercer Jr. (both Eden 1820), and Nathaniel Marcyes (Eden 1830).
Thomas Newmash is likely the same person as Thomas Newmish in the 1800 census of Eden. Research is needed to determine if this is a variant of Newman.
The surname recorded in the census is clearly Place. Research is needed to determine if this is an erroneous entry for the surname Peach.
Because both Peirce and Pierce are surnames used today, no attempt is made here to sort out which records may be variant spellings.
John Summerby (here) is likely the same person as John Somerby in the 1820 census of Eden, but it is uncertain which spelling, if either, is correct.
