(updated 22 April 2016)

Welcome to the Durham Cemeteries web site. The purpose of this site is to provide basic cemetery information and pertinent notes so individual researchers will not have to "reinvent the wheel" by tracking down the same material that others have already found.

Maine State Routes 9 and 136 pass through Durham. They meet, run together for a distance, and then diverge. Directions to some cemeteries start from the northern intersection of these two routes, and directions to other cemeteries start from their southern intersection (near the Durham Eureka Community Center).

The names of the 25 cemeteries below are from a hand-marked town map provided by the Durham town office.

Other burial places: Everett S. Stackpole, in History of Durham, Maine (1899), reported (p. 13) that the “burial place of Major Charles Gerrish was near the first house. No trace of it can now be seen, since the ground has been plowed over.” This first house “stood on the hillside east of the old, two-story, unpainted house that succeeded it”. This succeeding house was on the 200-acre parcel of “Capt. Gerrish” on the 1760 Noyes plan and was still standing when Stackpole wrote the book.

All information, especially source material, for inclusion in this web page should be sent to info@vfthomas.com or mailed to “Durham Cemeteries” to the address at the top of this page.

A little work by each of us will save a lot of work for all of us.
Thank you to Beverly Koenig, Ron Parker, and Shannon R. Plourde for their help with this page.
