Welcome to the Maine Cemeteries website. Cemeteries are an important source of genealogical data as well as being of historical interest in their own right. There are two major obstacles that one may encounter when dealing with cemetery data, other than the obvious difficulty of trying to read some of the gravestone inscriptions. The first obstacle is locating a cemetery. Some are in prominent places in a town, but others are in the woods and difficult to find. Directions in books may be non-existent, vague (e.g., "go short distance"), or likely out-of-date (e.g., "turn left on the --- Road and go to the home of ---"). The second obstacle is that incorrect information almost never gets corrected. This happens with books as well as with online data. Very rarely does an author of a book (on any topic, not just cemeteries) ever attempt to make available corrections and/or updated information. With the advent of the world wide web, this has never been easier, but it is almost never done. It is particularly inexcusable to post online information and then to ignore it when errors and/or new information comes to light, especially when changing that online information is such a simple matter. Posting material online is a great service but not correcting it is a great disservice.

(Alternatively, you can scroll down the page to that list of all minor civil divisions.) When a roster of cemeteries is known for a particular city, town, township, or plantation, that civil division's name is linked to a web page that gives further information about those cemeteries.
