The earliest McFarland families reported in the census records for Mount Desert Island were those of Benjamin and John Jr., both recorded in the 1830 census of Eden. There were two McFarland families in the 1840 census of Eden: John's (perhaps the same John as John Jr. of 1830) and Leonard's.
