Welcome to the Freeman genealogy. Family units are arranged alphabetically by the first name of the father (or single-parent mother). Links are provided to enable you to move up and down each lineage. To follow a line back in time (ancestors), click on the underlined portion of "(son of ...)" or "(dau. of ...)" beneath the name of the person you want to trace back. To follow a line forward in time (descendants), click on the name of the person whose offspring you want to see. A plus sign (+) following a name means that that person had one or more children, but that family group has not been added to this web page. A link to documentation and notes, when available, is given below each family.

All information, especially source material, for inclusion in this web page should be sent to info@vfthomas.com or mailed to "Mount Desert Island Genealogy; V. F. Thomas Co.; P. O. Box 400; Southwest Harbor, ME 04679". And, of course, please report all errors.

The earliest census records for Mount Desert Island that listed a Freeman as a "head of family" was the 1790 census of the town of Mount Desert, which reported a Reuben Freeman household with 3 "free white males" 16 and older and 6 "free white females". (Note that these 9 did not all have to be Freemans.) By 1800, there were two Freeman households, both in the town of Mount Desert: Reuben Freeman (4 males under 10 and 1 male 26–45, plus 1 female 26–45) and George Freeman (1 male under 10 and 1 male 26–45, plus 1 female under 10 and 1 female 16–25. Subsequent years reported the following households, all in the town of Mount Desert.
1810: George Freeman (8 residents including George), Reuben Freeman (11)
1820: George (8), Reuben (11)
1830: George (8), Reuben (6), Reuben Jr. (11)
1837: Benjamin (3), Daniel (7), George (7), James R. (7), Reuben (7), Reuben (6), Reuben (3), and Tyler (3)
1840: Benjamin S. (5), Daniel (5), James R. (6), Lewis (4), Reuben (5), Reuben Jr. (8), Reuben III (4), Tyler (3)
Until the 1850 census, individuals members of a household were reported only by a number in a category (e.g., "3 females under 10").
