The earliest census of Mount Desert Island that listed a Carroll as a "head of family" was the 1830 census of the town of Mount Desert, which reported a John Carroll household with 7 members. (Note that these 7 did not all have to be Carrolls and that one or more Carrolls might have been living in one or more other households.)
Until the 1850 census, individual members of a household were reported only by a tally in a category (e.g., "females 10 and under 15").
