Welcome
to the Deeds of Mount Desert Island home page, part of the Mount Desert Island Cultural History Project.
Purpose of this web page:
The purpose of this web page is to provide basic deed information and pertinent notes so individual researchers will not have to "reinvent the wheel" by tracking down the same material that others have already found. Initially this page will focus on (1) working forward from the earliest land grants to the property ownership shown on the maps of the Peters Plan and Salem Towne and (2) working backward from the land ownership of Acadia National Park by the United States government to the Peters Plan and Salem Towne maps. The ultimate goal of this page is to include all land on Mount Desert Island.
How this page is organized:
Deeds are arranged in order of book and page numbers found in the Hancock County Registry of Deeds. Links are provided to enable you to follow land history forward and backward in time. Compass directions and distances have been abbreviated (e.g., south sixty-five degrees twenty-three minutes east one hundred and ninety-nine and ninety-eight one-hundredths feet has been shortened to S 65 deg. 23 min. E 199.98'). Also, spelling has been updated (e.g., bowlder has been changed to boulder) and punctuation has been corrected and made consistent over all deeds.
How to contribute:
All information (including images) should be e-mailed to info@vfthomas.com or sent by traditional mail to MDI Deeds, c/o V. F. Thomas Co.; P. O. Box 400; Southwest Harbor, ME 04679.
