Notes:
   1The following surnames have been modified to bring them in line with current spelling: Cousins (from Cozens), Hamor (Hamar), Remick (Remmick), Richardson (Richison), Rodick (Reddocks), and Stetson (Stutson). From some of these variant spellings we might get a hint at how they were (mis)pronounced (e.g., Richison vs. Richardson).
   2It is uncertain if John Chapaux is the same person as John Chipar in the 1790 census of Mount Desert.
   3This surname was variously spelled as Massy (in the 1790 census of Mount Desert), Masser (Eden 1800), Morris (Eden 1810), Mercer (Eden 1820), and possibly Marcyes (Eden 1830). All of these entries were for a person with Nathaniel as a first name.
   4In the 1820 census of Eden, there was a Hannah Monarch. It is likely that Monarch and Monach are variations of the same name, but it is uncertain which, if either, spelling is correct.
   5 In addition to the Thomas Newmish (age 26–45) in this census, there was a Thomas Newmash (age 26–45) in Eden in 1810. In the 1820 census of Mount Desert, there was no one with the surname Newmish or Newmash, but there were two Newmans—Jonathan and Thomas—both in the range of 26–45 years old. Two questions arise: (1) Is the 1820 Thomas Newman from Mount Desert the same person as the 1810 Thomas Newmash from Eden? (2) If not, are either of the Newmans of 1820 sons of Thomas Newmash? An affirmative answer to either question would confirm that Newman is the same lineage as Newmash/Newmish. Turning to the first question, we find there is only one gravestone record of a Thomas Newman on Mount Desert Island. That is in the Newman Cemetery in what is now Southwest Harbor, which in 1820 was part of Mount Desert. That Thomas Newman died 9 January 1861 at the age of 75 years, 11 months, and 7 days. Hence, he was born in early 1785, too young to be the Thomas Newmash of 1810. So, we need to ask the second question. The Thomas Newman buried in the Newman Cemetery would have been about 25 years old in 1810 and could have been a son of Thomas Newmash. That he could have been the son does not, of course, mean that he was; it simply means that we probably cannot reject the father–son hypothesis based on age. The word probably has to be added here because ages as reported in census records are often approximate. A Jonathan Newman is buried in Mount Height Cemetery in Southwest Harbor, but there are no dates on the gravestone. Finally, there are no gravestone records on Mount Desert Island of anyone with the name Newmish or Newmash.
